Stories They Tell - Vila the Poet

Stories They Tell is an ongoing mini-documentary series by Nikki Celis and Annum Shah that follows various creatives in Canada. The series seeks to highlight new, emerging, and established artists and go beyond simply showcasing their art. Rather, it provides artists a personal platform to discuss their art vis-a-vis their personal lives.

To delve deeper into the world of spoken word, Storytellers follows Vila Chanthabouala. Originally from Surrey, B.C., Chanthabouala moved to Calgary at the age of 19 and has since then become an integral part of Calgary’s spoken word scene. In this documentary, she talks about her experiences growing up, her journey unlearning the labels placed on her, and her identity. Chanthabouala also discusses how spoken word has helped her find power within herself to rise above the hardships she has faced.
